April Illustrations
I am currently taking part in this Instagram challenge called "The 100 Day Project" whereby participants are to post a craft or art related project daily for 100 days. (Search for tags #the100dayproject and #100daysofrhinesticworks)
Ideally, one is supposed to choose an action (for example, photography) and repeat that action for the next 100 days. I kinda skipped that action repetition part by mistake and have been posting various craft and art projects.. Which.. I will continue to do so. Since I love changing things up.
Anyway, as part of my own challenge (parallel to "The 100 Day Project"), I decided to start on an illustration series which I might consider getting printed into an illustration book.
Titled "Insignificances".
And a random doodle I did in between which I am still contemplating to convert into a proper illustration..

March Illustrations
March had been a confusing month.
It started with me feeling frustrated at myself with issues and non-issues all over again, and the other half had a little discussion with me and we both contemplated that it's high time that I needed some time-out.
And so, I began my art therapy sessions with this lovely lady. Instead of pure counselling, the sessions are more of 'I' coming to terms with myself and recognizing the root causes to my current states of mind.
My turbulent mood mellowed as mid-march arrived. I finally managed to start on the gifts that I had wanted to make a year ago.. (Gasp!) Instead of choosing ready-made patterns to make my life a little easier, I decided to come up with my own knitted designs. As usual, what have I gotten myself into...? :P
More yarn handling ensued when I decided to take part in a community event. Participants are tasked to make scarves for the needy residing in the highlands of Northern Thailand.
The end of March marked the loss of a great man in our country and the past week had been a week of mourning for the whole nation.

The Artist in Me
I don't know if you still remember but a few months back (that would be in the year 2014..), I got myself a watercolor travel kit by Van Gogh (Royal Talens) before my Tokyo trip. (Digging up post.. over here!)
I managed to paint quite a bit over there.
But after coming back to Singapore, that fire in me suddenly turned to water with a bad touch of alchemy and vaporized into steam. Do not ask me how that happened... (Come to think about it, I guess I was very busy having business meetings with Ailyn from Tat'sWorthy@Such for our collab workshop!)
Then 2015 arrived, and on the very spanking new day, while strolling at a nearby park, I decided to dish out my 95% untouched mini sketchpad and started sketching things that I was seeing around me. A little painting wouldn't hurt too.
Random wilted leaves, pods and flowers on the pathway
Tree stump with a bush of weird tendrils
Tree with bunches of yellow flower..
I think I was on a roll! A few days later, I busted out my ink pen and the Japanese watercolor set that I got from Tokyo. This time, I challenged myself to a less-than-30-minute doodle and paint. I ended up walking around my studio and doodled random art supplies.
And then the painting and drawing bug took over my life, kinda. I chanced upon this large pinkish cloud in the sky one evening..
Evening Sky - Ink, Watercolor and Gouache on 5" x 7" watercolor paper
Getting a little bored of see-draw-paint, I decided to play around with illustration and a different kind of style.
The Chirpy Gentleman - Ink illustration on watercolored background (5" x 7" watercolor paper)
I also toyed around with abstract watercolor painting!
Jellyfish Universe - Watercolor and Gouache on 5" x 7" watercolor paper
Did another illustration on watercolored background for the most recent work..
Garden of Herbs - Ink illustration on watercolor background (5" x 7" watercolor paper)
More illustrations! More paintings! Here I come!

Preparing to fly. Preparing to paint.
A little nerve-wrecking, what with the pretty recent news about the eruption of Mount Ontake in Japan. Plus the news of typhoon which will be making landfall on Tokyo later today.. At least the weather seems to look good for the few days after. *Fingers crossed*
XB and I will be flying to Tokyo for a short vacation the coming week. Amidst the research on craft places and mountains to visit, I was contemplating on getting a watercolor travel kit to jumpstart the habit of doing some kind of fast illustration/artwork daily by getting my feet wet during this trip.
I must have not been looking hard enough, but I had a tough time searching online for a local arts supplies shop that sells renowned brands of water color travel kits.
I tried looking at Art Friend, but couldn't find any at the Clementi branch (I went back to the Bras Basah branch a few days back, and I saw that they had restocked the Daler Rowny full pans kit). "Overjoyed" near Little India MRT station stocks only Pebeo brand, which I am not too sure if it is any good since there is almost zero reviews on it..
Out of exasperation, I almost bought the Akashiya Watercolor Palette Box from Jetpens.com while toying myself with the idea of also getting the Sakura Koi Watercolor set to justify the high shipping cost from the US.
Eventually, I managed to find a local art store (one with a pretty long history too.. Since 1967..), Straits Art Co., that sells a large array of paints, brushes, papers and canvases. The lady recommended the Van Gogh (from Royal Talens) watercolor pocket box kit for beginners like me. Apparently, this is a student grade watercolor paint higher up on the quality scale as compared to other student grade brands.
Let's see how this goes!
